 BLUEFACED LEICESTER

The Breed

A broad muzzle, long neck, good mouth and erect ears give the Bluefaced Leicester
 a very distinct appearance. The skin on its hornless, wool free head shows
 dark blue through white hair but it perhaps the proud Roman nose
which sets this sheep apart from other breeds.

Evolved during the last century for breeding purposes, it was commonly known
 as the 'Hexham Leicester' due to its early concentration in Northumberland.
 Today it is one of the most prolific sheep breeds being the
 most popular crossing sire throughout the British Isles.

The Wool

Wool from the Bluefaced Leicester is soft, demi lustrous
and is considered to be one of the finest in Britain.

It has a sheen which dyes most effectively and is
long-stapled, curly or crimped with a soft handle.
